What are group messages on iPhone?
Before you know how to Create and Manage Group Chats on iPhone, you should know what group messages are. Group messages on iPhone are similar to group chats on Whatsapp, Telegram, etc.
On your iPhone, you can do 3 types of group messages and these depend on device, settings, network connection, and carrier plan. For example,
- If everyone in the group uses iMessage, then the group messages are sent as iMessage.
- If some people in the group don’t have iMessage then, then they will receive the messages as MMS or SMS.

Group iMessage
iMessages come in blue text bubbles, similarly, Group iMessages also come in blue text bubbles. These messages are sent through Apple and not your carrier. All iMessage conversations are end-to-end encrypted. Note that, all users in group iMessage need to use iMessage to access its features like,

How to create group messages on iPhone
To create group messages on iPhone, follow these steps,
Step 1 Open the Messages app on your iPhone.
Step 2 Tap on the new message icon to start a new message.
Step 3 Enter the name of the contacts (group members) in the To field. Tap the plus sign to add more contacts.
Step 4 Type your message in the Text Message field.
Step 5 Now, tap on the Arrow icon to send the message.

How to name a group iMessage
You can name a group iMessage as long as all the members in the group are using an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch. You can’t name a group SMS/MMS or iMessage conversation with just one person in it.

Step 1 Open the group iMessage.
Step 2 Tap on the group icon at the top of the message thread. For older devices, tap on the icon and then tap on the info button.
Step 3 Now, tap on Change Name and Photo.

How to change group iMessage picture
You can change the picture of your group iMessage as long as all the members in the group are using an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch. Here’s how you can change the picture of a group iMessage,
Step 1 Open the group iMessage.
Step 2 Tap on the group icon at the top of the message thread. For older devices, tap on the icon and then tap on the info button.
Step 3 Now, tap on Change Name and Photo.
Step 4 Now tap the Camera button to take a new photo or select from a photo you already have. You can also choose an emoji or Memoji for your group’s photo.

How to add and remove participants on group messages
Depending on the group message type, you can add or remove participants from the group. You can only add and remove contacts on iMessage groups. Anyone from the group can add and remove members from an iMessage group as there is no admin or superuser.
To add a member from your iMessage group, follow these steps,
Step 1 Tap on the group iMessage to open the conversation.
Step 2 Tap on the group name or group members.
Step 3 Now, tap on the info icon (i).
Step 4 Tap on Add Contact.
Step 5 Then, add the details of the new member.
That is all you need to do to add a member to your iMessage group.
To remove a member from your iMessage group, follow these steps,
Step 1 Tap on the group iMessage to open the conversation.
Step 2 Tap on the group name or group members.
Step 3 Now, tap on the info icon (i).
Step 4 Now, swipe left on the contact that you want to remove. Note that, an iMessage group should have at least three members.
Step 5 Tap on the Red Remove button to remove the contact.
How to exit a group iMessage
In case you don’t want to be a member of an iMessage group, you can exit it. Exiting a group will prevent you from receiving and sending messages to it. You won’t be able to manage it anymore either.
Note that you can exit MMS message groups.
To exit a group iMessage, follow these steps,
Step 1 Open the group iMessage conversation.
Step 2 Tap on the group icon at the top of the message thread. For older devices, tap on the icon and then tap on the info button.
Step 3 Tap on the red “Leave this Conversation” button at the bottom.
And that’s it, you have exited the group iMessage. You won’t be able to send or receive messages from the group. You won’t be able to interact with it either.
