Reports have surfaced suggesting that Apple is working on a Siri update which might drop the word “Hey” from the Hey Siri trigger phrase and users will only have to say the word “Siri” followed by the command to wake up the assistant.
Apple To Make Changes To The Hey Siri Trigger Phrase?
In his latest Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman said that Apple is working on a way for users to be able to wake Siri by simply saying “Siri” instead of “Hey Siri”.
He expects this new update to roll out sometime next year or in 2024 depending on how well the update performs in the tests.
“The company is working on an initiative to drop the “Hey” in the trigger phrase so that a user only needs to say “Siri”—along with a command. While that might seem like a small change, making the switch is a technical challenge that requires a significant amount of AI training and underlying engineering work.”Mark Gurman, Power On Newsletter
It’s also reported that Apple has been working on making changes to their AI over the last couple of months and are running tests with their employees to ensure that Siri can understand a wide range of dialects and accents before it can be officially released to the public.
If the new wake phrase update rolls out, Apple will definitely have a greater advantage over its competitors, especially Google, which still relies heavily on the use of “OK Google” or “Hey Google” to wake the Virtual Assistant.
The Bloomberg report also suggests that Apple is working on making improvements to Siri such as its integration into third-party applications to provide better assistance to users.
Gurman says, “It will integrate the voice assistant deeper into third-party apps and services and improve its ability to understand users and take the correct course of action”.
Shortening the trigger phrase and integrating Siri into third-party applications are two of the major changes Apple is expected to bring around with their future Siri update.
Part of the delayed release could be also due to the fact that Apple strives for user privacy and since Siri has unfiltered access to a wide range of personal information, it’s only fitting for the company to take their time perfecting Siri’s new features.
